Our summer is coming to a close, but that has not slowed our revolving door of guests. To complete the list, we had two more rounds of hosting at The Peters Chateau.
First up was our friend from Winnipeg, Katie, and her son Jude. This also marked the occasion of hosting our youngest guest for the year! At this point, we had it all down to a science and toured the usual spots, giving the usual recommendations. Amy and Katie got out for a couple of girls’ nights, which meant I was tasked with babysitting. Jude and I spent lots of our time together doing some introspective thinking and pondering the mysteries of life. In reality though, he was asleep by 6:30PM, and then I quietly went about my evening with the baby monitor on.

Our friend, Katie, and her little boy, Jude, came to visit us. Jude and Justin really hit it off.
Our next round of guests were our friends from Portage. Our friend, Veronica and her mom, Gayle, as well as our friend, Travis, all came to visit for a week. Amy and I have made it a tradition with Travis and Veronica to get out for a hike each summer. So, with our move, we thought why not continue the tradition in a new province?! The trail we chose was the Cape Split Trail, which is one that Amy and I got to do on our honeymoon. It’s been something we have wanted to revisit while living in Halifax, and thought we’d wait to add it to this tradition.
There was only one issue with our plans for the early Saturday morning hike: it was forecast to downpour all day. All of us were a little apprehensive about doing the hike as we watched Saturday arrive and the rain not letting up. As a group, we decided that even if the rain was too much we could at least check out the small town of Wolfville, which was nearby.
While we made the drive out, the rain seemed to get worse. But it thankfully turned into a gentle shower as we turned into the park. The entire area had a thick fog settled on it, making a lot of the views that Amy and I remember from our honeymoon near impossible to see. It was not too muddy as the water flowed along the side of the trail, but there was still some spots where water had pooled and we needed to either leap over or drudge through. At this point our shoes were already soaked, so what difference did it make if we walked through a puddle?

Our hike along Cape Split with Veronica, Gayle and Travis. Views were good, company was spectacular.
When we reached the top, the view was still breathtaking, but partially obscured by the fog. You could sort of see the hills in the distance, but the thick fog made it appear as if we were staring out into open water. Before making our return journey, we stopped for lunch and found a semi-dry spot to shield us from the wind and rain while we ate our sandwiches.
The hike back to the parking lot was uneventful. As a group, I think we all felt the desire to return to the truck and change into some dry clothes, so there was not much stopping on the way. The rain subsided while on the trail, but right as we saw the parking lot and stepped out of the tree cover, the heavens opened up and we got one last dump of rain to conclude the hike. By the end of the trail, my rain jacket did not do anything to block the water, and the rest of layers underneath were completely soaked. I was thankful for dry clothes in that moment. Once we were all changed, we made our way back home.

Trying (but failing) to keep dry on the Cape Split Trail with Veronica, Gayle and Travis.
There were plans to stop for ice cream at the conveniently named ‘Look & Lick’ shop, only a ten minute drive from the trail. But, with all the fog, there was not much to look at, so we held off on our licking. A warm shower and some hot food was the reward we sought after a day like this.
With our hike to Cape Split in the books and our friends heading home to Manitoba, we had successfully finished hosting at our home in Nova Scotia. We are so grateful for the friends and family who helped build memories over this year. Shared memories are the best.
We’ll be closing this chapter of our adventure soon!
Love,
J&A
